Jameel Mohammed Designs KHIRY Custom Jewelry for Coming 2 America

More than two years in the making, we’re absolutely thrilled to announce the creation of a custom set of jewels for the film, Coming 2 America, designed by KHIRY founder, Jameel Mohammed, in collaboration with Academy Award winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter, with huge thanks to Tanja Caldwell!
In the film Garcelle Beauvais wore the Glass Beaded Rose Bearer Set designed by Jameel, featuring a dramatic Gold Vermeil and Glass Bead draped necklace, Gold Vermeil and Glass Beaded feathered cuffs, a Gold Vermeil and Swarovski Stone ring, and a pair of Gold Vermeil and Glass Beaded ear cuffs.
The Rose Bearer set took flight from the idea of “African High Jewelry”. Finding inspiration in Sudanese beaded bodices from the Dinka Tribe, Jameel built the pieces for the set by hand, stringing graduated beads in scalloped shapes, to form a necklace with a dramatic front drape, and cuffs set with dyed pheasant feathers amid strands and strands of red glass.
Jameel is incredibly honored to have been given the space by Ruth E. Carter and her team to explore the craft in this way and on this historic stage. We can’t wait to show you all the ideas this process has sparked!
On a hot summer day in 2019, Jameel shot the still-in-process pieces of the Rose Bearer Set on his roof in Harlem. The pieces, eventually worn by Garcelle Beauvais in the feature film, were graciously modeled on the rooftop by Marie Chante (wearing black) and Berry (wearing tan).
